cropduster
Some cotton crops this year are late, with green or immature bolls, so farmers have been waiting to defoliate (stop the growth process) and delaying harvest. More gamblers are found in West Texas agriculture than in Las Vegas casinos.

weir

I am working on a photography project with municipal departments. My friend suggested a "what is it?" for the blog using some of the pictures. I've told you what this is -- where is it?

super service drive in
yeso, new mexico

There wasn't enough traffic along US 60 to keep the Super Service Drive In busy - nor any of the other businesses in this town halfway between Vaughn and Ft. Sumner. Established in 1906 with the coming of the railroad, the town "went" after about 30 years. This posting is apropos for Halloween - a google-search of "Yeso" mentions its status as a ghost town. Maybe the Super Service Drive In still caters to passing souls.

fort union

Fort Union was established along the Santa Fe Trail after the Civil War in 1869. Today the National Monument outside Las Vegas, New Mexico evokes the spirit of the past with the adobe ruins and relics of the western frontier.

georgia o'keeffe country
Ghost Ranch was originally a dude ranch in the 1930s where Georgia O'Keeffe owned a small adobe house and marveled at the colors in the "bad lands." Ghost Ranch is a few miles north of Abiquiu in the Chama Valley. Abiquiu village was "closed" because of all the equipment, traffic and hubbub of movie filming -- I think "Cowboys and Aliens" but I didn't catch a glimpse of Harrison Ford. Today Ghost Ranch is a Presbyterian conference center but the colors and the mesas remain.

scarecrow soiree

A brigade of burlap-faced scarecrows lines up outside the Lubbock Arboretum. Their job last weekend was to greet visitors to the Pumpkin Trail. Today the scarecrows are smiling in the sunshine; what will the moon of Hallow's Eve turn them into?

as the leaf turns

I spent the weekend with my old friends Robitussin, Sudafed and Musinex -- hence no new photos taken nor posted. I felt as drab and drear as this fallen leaf -- buffeted by today's gusty, dusty winds.

To fill in the spaces, I've posted rejects from my entries into the annual High and Dry Photography Exhibit hosted by the Texas Tech International Cultural Center featuring the lands and people of the world's semi-arid lands. This year, the letter informs me that one of my entries has been selected from the hundreds received and will be exhibited.
